1989 "Barking Dog" Original Drawing by Keith Haring (ex-Charlie Sheen Collection)

1989 "Barking Dog" Original Drawing by Keith Haring (ex-Charlie Sheen Collection)

Charming drawing (black marker on paper) by the inimitable Keith Haring. Sold to actor Charlie Sheen at a top Beverly Hills Gallery sometime after the success of Major League. Obtained from Mr. Sheen to Leland's in the early 2000s, it resurfaces here for the first time. Mr. Sheen owned several Haring’s. Engaging work is brilliantly framed (overall 19x16”), drawing itself is 11x9”. Condition is Near Mint. Simple everyday canine (or a visual symbol for one) barking out of frustration with the world. Perhaps he is contemplating the struggle in USA 1989 with worlds colliding, modern warfare at our front door and social justice all around us. Or maybe he is hungry. With great artists, even when something is simple, we sometimes reach out to the most complex solutions. Example, John Lennon’s Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. This dean of today’s graffiti artists, this 20th century Banksy, responded to the NYC street culture of the 1980s with a new and defining visual language simply reflected in this work. As Shakespeare once said, “It ain’t easy being a dog.”
