1989 Ken Griffey Jr. Rookie Seattle Mariners Game Used Cooper Bat (PSA GU 9)
Ken Griffey Jr was born to play baseball. The Hall of Famer is the son of Ken Griffey Sr., former MLB outfielder, mostly for the Cincinnati Reds' "Big Red Machine" and the New York Yankees. As a youngster, "Junior" used to hang out in the New York Yankee clubhouse with his father and even work in practice time on the Yankee Stadium field. Presented is a 1989 game used Ken Griffey Jr Seattle Mariners bat from Junior's rookie season. Junior broke into the Major Leagues in '89 as a 19-year-old center fielder for the Seattle Mariners. That season he hit 16 homers, with 61 RBIs, batting .264 with 16 stolen bases. In '89, he finished third in the '89 AL Rookie of the Year voting. In his 22 -year MLB career, Junior hit 630 home runs, the seventh most in MLB history. The 7-time Silver Slugger winner won 10 Gold Gloves and was a 13-time All-Star. His best overall season was in 1997, with Seattle, as he led in AL in homers (56), RBIs (147), and Slugging (.646), and batted .304. In 1990-91, the Griffeys played together on the same Seattle team. On Sept. 14, 1990, the Griffeys hit back-to-back home runs for Seattle against the California Angels, the first and only father and son duo to hit home runs back-to-back. The offered ash bat is a Cooper Model C271 bat with a standard finish. It is 34" long and weighs 30.7 ounces. The bat exhibits medium wear. Several ball marks and stitch impressions are visible on the right barrel. Ball marks include blue ink transfers. Cleat marks are visible on both the left and right barrels. The length (34") and weight (31 oz) are stamped on the knob. The bat has a Ken Griffey Jr. crisscross tape application that extends 14.25" from the knob to the Cooper center logo. There is a light coat of pine tar on the handle. An additional feature of the bat is that Ken Griffey's name is imprinted upon the bat without the "Jr." as was done during 'Junior's" first Major League season. The bat comes with a PSA Letter of Grading and Authentication. The bat has a PSA/DNA grade of "GU 9."
