1996 Louis Sojo "Turn Back the Clock" New York Yankees Game Worn Jersey

1996 Louis Sojo "Turn Back the Clock" New York Yankees Game Worn Jersey

Offered is a Special Edition New York Yankees jersey that was only worn once, on June 8, 1996, to commemorate the New York Black Yankees, a team in the Negro leagues from 1932 through 1948. When the New York Yankees wore these jerseys on June 8, 1996, at Detroit's Tiger Stadium, it was the first time the Bronx Bombers wore anything other than their traditional jerseys in franchise history. The New York Black Yankees was a team that was founded as the Harlem Black Bombers in 1931. The co-owner was the famous dancer and actor Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. The team often played home games at Yankee Stadium, although other home games were played in Paterson, New Jersey and at other sites in the New York Metropolitan area. Famous players on the team each a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame - included: Satchel Paige, pitcher (1941); Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe, pitcher and catcher; George "Mule" Suttles, first baseman and outfielder; and Wille Wells, shortstop (1945-46). The game worn jersey is gray 100% polyester. On the chest, vintage, ornate lettering reads "Yankees." On the lower outside front tail is a Russell Athletic tag providing washing instructions. Next to the aforementioned tag is a Diamond Collection tag listing the size as 44". Beneath the Diamond Collection tag is a smaller tag reading 100% polyester and another small tag reading "+3" sleeve length." The back of the jersey has Sojo's number 19, in vintage, ornate numbering. When the New York Yankees wore these uniforms, they lost to the Tigers 9-7. Luis Sojo did not see game action. The jersey shows slight use from pregame warm-ups, and it is a visually appealing reminder of one of New York City's Negro League clubs.
