1998 Sammy Sosa Chicago Cubs Game Worn Jersey

Chicago Cubs road jersey worn by outfielder Sammy Sosa during his historic 1998 MVP season. The gray knit jersey is lettered "Chicago" across the front and features the number "21" on the left breast and reverse. "Sosa" is lettered on the reverse above the number. All letters are applied in blue on white tackle twill, while all numerals are applied in red on white tackle twill. A white strip tag in the collar features the jersey number, size, and year ("21-48-98") stamped in black. A "Russell Athletic size 48" label is located on the left front tail. The left sleeve features both a Cubs team patch and a Harry Caray "Hey Hey" memorial patch. The right sleeve features another circular Harry Caray memorial patch (Caray, the Cubs longtime broadcaster, died on February 18, 1998). The jersey is all original and displays light wear. Sosa waged a historic home-run duel with Mark McGwire in 1998, with both sluggers eventually breaking Roger Maris' single-season home run record of 61. Sosa's 66 home runs fell four short of McGwire's 70 that season, but he bested McGwire in both RBI and runs, posting league-leading totals of 158, and 139, respectively, in those two categories. Sosa also batted .308 in helping to lead the Cubs to a wildcard spot in the National League playoffs. Those accomplishments later earned him the MVP Award at season's end. One of only nine players to hit 600 or more home runs, Sosa finished his career with 609 home runs, 1,667 RBI, and a .273 lifetime average.
