19th Century Baseball ABC Plate

19th Century Baseball ABC Plate

This rare and very attractive Brown Transfer, Soft Paste Plate measures 8" in diameter. In the center is a decoration depicting a baseball game in progress. Above the scene is text that reads, "American Sports," and below it reads "Base Ball, Striker & Catcher." This series of Staffordshire baseball plates was produced in both 6.5" and 8" sizes, with the larger being much rarer and far more desirable. The ground porcelain plate is white with raised letters of the alphabet, from A to Z, along the rim. It is in nice condition with only a very small chip on the edge of the back rim but there is no other damage of any kind visible.
