19th Century John L. Sullivan Tobacco Cardboard Advertising Sign (17x12”)

19th Century John L. Sullivan Tobacco Cardboard Advertising Sign (17x12”)

Out of this world advertising sign on heavy cardboard is stunning standing image of the champion bareknuckler in the famous cabinet pose of the era. Blue overlay text in gorgeous font reads, “Gail & Ax Navy and Blue Ribbon Tobacco.” Circa 1889, this advertises the boxing card product. It asks you to “Send Us 10 Wrappers and Secure FREE One of These Elegant Photos (Unmounted) With No Advertising On It.” Some restoration to edges has been brilliantly restored and is virtually undetectable. There is likely a small border trimmed off at each side as well. However, it is now in otherwise excellent condition and looks magnificent! We offered a specimen nearly identical to this one (it had a different tobacco advertiser) in our May 2002 auction with a $25,000 reserve. Now, here is your chance to play. Again, a piece that sings.
