6/28/98 Ken Griffey Jr. Seattle Mariners Signed & Inscribed "HR #32" Game Used Home Run Bat (PSA GU 9 & Griffey Jr. COA)
Displayed is a 1998, game used, signed Ken Griffey Jr. Louisville Slugger bat from the Seattle Mariners away game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Bank One Ballpark on 6/28/1998 when the Hall of Fame center fielder hit his 32nd home run of the season. Known as "Junior," Ken Griffey Jr. was the son of Ken Griffey Sr., who played in the Major Leagues for 19 years, mostly with the Cincinnati Reds and the New York Yankees, and Junior spent many hours in the Yankee clubhouse and practicing with his father on the Yankee Stadium field. Junior played 22 Major League seasons, mostly with the Seattle Mariners (1989-99 & 2009-10), and the Cincinnati Reds (2000-2008). In '98, Junior was coming off a brilliant '97 season when he hit 56 home runs and was the AL MVP. In '98, Junior again clubbed 56 home runs, and he added 146 RBI. In the game on June 28th, when the displayed bat was game used, the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated Seattle 3-2. Griffey Jr. batted third and played center field. Seattle was trailing 1-0 in the top of the 6th inning, with two outs and the bases empty. Griffey hit a 1-1 pitch over the fence down the line in right field for his 32nd homer, off the Diamondback starter, Brain Anderson. This homer was career number 326 for Junior. In his other at bats, Griffey singled to right in the first inning, popped up to second in the 4th, and lined out to first in the 8th. In his Major League career, the younger Griffey hit 630 homers, the seventh most in MLB history. He was a 10-time Gold Glove recipient, a 13-time All-Star, and tied with Dale Long and Don Mattingly for the longest consecutive game home run streak, at eight. The bat is 33.75" long, and it weighs 30 ounces. The barrel is hollowed out, and there is crisscross tape on the handle, with light pine tar remnants on the tape. The bat, with a black finish, is cracked in a spot between the end of the barrel tape and the Louisville Slugger logo. The bat shows good use, with ball marks and blue paint transfers. Griffey signed and inscribed the bat, using silver ink from a marker, as "Ken Griffey Jr. 98 HR 32." The bat comes with a Unique Sports Certificate of Authenticity that is signed by Ken Griffey Jr as well as a PSA GU 9 LOA.
