899-1900 M101-1 Sporting News & National Copper Plate Co. Supplement Collection (12)
Collection of eleven 1899-1900 M101-1 Sporting News Supplements and one 1898-1899 National Copper Plate Company Portrait. Both issues are similar in size and composition because the National Copper Plate Company also produced the supplements for The Sporting News. A total of sixty-two Sporting News Supplements were produced, which could be obtained individually each week in the paper, or in bound volumes of fifty with a subscription to the paper. Each Sporting News supplement features its date of issue along the top border and a short biography of the respective player on the reverse. The National Copper Plate Portraits were sold in a portfolio containing 50 prints. Both issues are scarce, with collections such as these seldom seen at auction. M101-1 Sporting News Supplements (11): Bobby Wallace, Mike Donlin, James Callahan, Louis Criger, Burt Jones, Edward Lewis, Herman Long, J. Emmet Hendrick, John O'Connor, Theodore Breitenstein, and James Williams. These supplements (9x11") were printed on thin, glossy stock and therefore were susceptible to damage. The offered collection is no exception and most display small tears, creases and pin/tack holes. It should be noted that most of the aforementioned defects are relegated to the border areas and the main images are free of any significant flaws. Condition ranges from Poor to Good, averaging Fair, with the exception of Heidrick (EX). 1898-1899 National Copper Plate Company Portrait (1): Louis Criger. Identical image to that used for his M101-1 Sporting News Supplement. The portrait has been trimmed to its current dimensions (9.5x12") and displays a small chip in the lower right corner; otherwise Excellent in its overall appearance.
