934-1936 Diamond Matchbook Philadelphia Phillies Collection (20) w/Chuck Klein

934-1936 Diamond Matchbook Philadelphia Phillies Collection (20) w/Chuck Klein

Offered is a charming collection of 20 Diamond match book covers (depicting 13 different Philadelphia Phillies players) featuring Hall of Famer Chuck Klein and other players from the 1934-36 Philadelphia Phillies. This time period was during the Great Depression, and an inexpensive way of collecting a rough equivalent of baseball cards was to save these match book covers. The adult fan could save the covers for himself or gift them to please a child, many of whom could not afford baseball cards in such hard economic times. The covers feature Chuck Klein, the great power hitting right fielder who had three tours with the Phillies, covering all or part of 15 seasons during his 17-year career. match book cover features Dick Bartell. Bartell was a 2-time All-Star shortstop who played for the Phillies in 1934. Another interesting cover is that of Ethan Allen, a lifetime .300 hitter. A scholar as well as an athlete, Allen earned two degrees, and coached future President George H.W. Bush. Ethan Allen also developed a well-known board game, All-Star Baseball, featuring players' statistics. Some of the match book covers are of the same player in different years, or with a varied colored background. Each match book cover includes a small player biography. Most are in good condition. The covers measure 1.5x4.5", and the collection carries with it a wealth of nostalgia.
