977 Brooks Robinson Baltimore Orioles Signed Game Worn Jersey (Photo-Matched & MEARS A10)

977 Brooks Robinson Baltimore Orioles Signed Game Worn Jersey (Photo-Matched & MEARS A10)

Baltimore Orioles home jersey worn by Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson during his final Major League season in 1977. Graded A10 by MEARS. The white knit jersey is lettered "Orioles" across the front and features the number "5" on the left breast and reverse. "Robinson" is lettered upon a white name plate on the reverse, directly above the number. All letters and numerals are applied in orange on black tackle twill. Located on the interior right front tail are a "Rawlings 42" label and an adjacent flag tag reading "Set 1 1977." Robinson has inscribed the jersey "Brooks Robinson HOF 83" in blue Sharpie (grading 8/10) on the right breast. The jersey is original as issued and displays light-to-moderate wear.

1977 marked Robinson's final season in the Majors, but his main duties that year were as a coach, not a player. Still, Robinson managed to play in 24 games that year, with his final appearance coming as a pinch hitter on August 13th. Robinson is considered by many to be the greatest fielding third baseman in baseball history, a reputation bolstered by his sixteen consecutive Gold Glove Awards between the years 1960 and 1975. Although best remembered for his hundreds of incredible fielding plays, he was more than a fair hitter, finishing his career with a .267 lifetime average, 268 home runs, and 1,357 RBI, including a league-leading total of 118 in 1964. One interesting aspect of this jersey is that it was photo-matched to one worn by Robinson during an Orioles Old Timers Day event in 1989. While only speculation, the team probably retained the jersey after the 1977 season for just such an occasion and it's possible that it was worn by Robinson for several Old Timers Day games over the years.
