Abe Attell Signed Photo To His Mother (25x31”)
A symbol of pride, love, and accomplishment, this elegant and oversized photo once served as a gift from Featherweight Champion Abe Attell to his mother. Over the course of the young pugilist’s career he would make a record 21 successful defenses of his title against names such as Sullivan, Forbes, Kid Herman, and Kilbane. And though his accomplishments were great and many he will best be remembered for his alleged involvement in the 1919 Chicago White Sox scandal. Though his reputation may have been tarnised his image here image is impeccable, seated and formally dressed with white-gloved hands folded. Below, the hand painted caption reads, “Abe Attell, Feather Weight Champion of the World”. In the right corner is his white paint pen inscription, “To My Dear Mother, from her loving Son Abe”. The photograph, from “White N.Y.” displays a clear and crisp image with only the most minor of imperfections. One of the finest early 20-th century specimens in existence. EX-MT.
