Alfredo Marcano Ring Magazine Championship Belt

Alfredo Marcano Ring Magazine Championship Belt

The most coveted award bestowed on any prize fighter is the coveted Ring Magazine Championship Belt. Seldom do any come to market as these are cherished by the fighters and their families, but we offer one here. This is the Ring Magazine belt given to Venezuelan boxer Alfredo Marcano. During his career, which spanned from 1966 to 1975, Marcano won the WBA World Super Featherweight title and challenged for the WBA title on July 29, 1971, against Hiroshi Kobayashi. The fight took place in Japan—the home country of the champion, but Marcano won the fight with a tenth round technical knockout. After becoming champion, he returned to Venezuela to make his first defense against Japanese challenger Kenji Iwata, Marcano once again won with a knockout. It was to be the only defense of his title, as he lost a unanimous decision to Ben Villaflor in his next fight. After the fight Marcano went undefeated until September 1974, when he unsuccessfully challenged Bobby Chacon for the WBC title—the fight ended in the ninth round with Chacon scoring a knockout. In March 1975 he was knocked out again, this time by Art Hafey, in what was to be his final fight. Marcano died in April 2009 at the age of 62. This is the original Ring Magazine Championship Belt awarded to him and includes the red, white, blue and gold sash with clips at each end as well as three gold color metal plates attached by three linked chains on either side of the center plate. The center plate with eagle atop is inscribed "WORLD JUNIOR LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY ALFREDO MARCANO OF VENEZUELA." The Venezuelan flags are present, the right plate is inscribed "IN AOMORI JAPAN JULY 29, 1971." The left plate is inscribed "KNOCKED OUT HIROSHI KOBAYASHI IN 10 ROUNDS." Clean front and back with no noticeable flaws, it measures 33." long. An extraordinarily rare offering, especially in this condition.
