Amazing Collection of George Burke Original Negatives (approx. 8,000)

Amazing Collection of George Burke Original Negatives (approx. 8,000)

One of the most important auction lots ever to be brought to the sports buying public. This is a major archive of original negatives from the fabulous photography of George Burke. Burke is one of the premiere baseball photographers of the century. His name is up there with men like Charles Conlon and Louis Van Oeyen. However, Burke is unique in that his work was more akin to the Hollywood glamour photographer's of the 30s like George Hurrell and Clarence Sinclair Bull. His backlighting, invasive composition, and matte finished portraits brought a style and flair to sports photography that had not been seen before or since. These original negatives were obtained directly from George Burke before his death by Jim Rowe who was essentially in the same business of reproducing baseball photographs for purchase by fans, collectors and the players themselves. Rowe used these negatives to bolster his own stock and business and used them for many years. The vast majority (except for less than 5% of the collection) are first generation originals and measure 5x7". They are in excellent condition will make wondrous George Burke prints of nearly unlimited dimension. Most interestingly the secret of Burke's genius lies here in these negatives. Many of the negatives have been slightly altered effect the appearance of the printed positives. They have been done so to create the soft focus “halo” effect around the player that is so coveted and trademark of Burke’s genius. Burke’s images are luminescent and visually stunning, giving them a unique and most desired look. These are by far the finest baseball or sports negatives ever to become available to the public. Some of the names, many duplicated with various poses, included herein: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, John McGraw, Chief Bender, Eddie Collins, Walter Johnson, Rogers Hornsby, Mel Ott, Rudy York, Dick Sisler, Hal Trosky, Hack Wilson, Dizzy Trout, George Stirnweiss, Birdie Tebbets, Mickey Owen, Bobby Doerr, Tom Yawkey, Heinie Manush, Pie Traynor, Lloyd Waner, Ted Lyons, Rabbit Maranville, Al Lopez, Hal Newhouser, Bill McKechnie, Johnny Mize, Dolph Camilli, Lefty Grove, Casey Stengel, Phil Rizzuto, Enos Slaughter, Al Simmons, Red Ruffing, Bob Feller, Luke Appling, Lou Boudreau, Mickey Cochrane, Jocko Conlan, Red Faber, Chas.
