Handwritten letter by Arhur Ashe is undated but the accompanying envelope is postmarked September 3, 1975 -- only weeks after he'd won at Wiblemdon and attained #1 ranking in the world. Sent to N.Y. Post columnist Leonard Lyons' wife Sylvia, relating his future plans to "buy more art [and] get more involved in South Africa." Ashe, of course, had led a tennis boycott of that country for its apartheid policy. His 1993 death from AIDS was one of the sports' great tragedies. Letter on Ashe's personal Washington D.C. stationery written in blue marker with a NRMT signature. 7.25 x 10.5" and NRMT w/2 light folds.
