"At the Hockey Game" by Griswold Tyng
From a time when college sports ruled, this wonderful oil on canvas in original frame (22.5x32.5") is, "At the Hockey Game" by Griswold Tyng, an artist and illustrator from the Massachusetts area. Reminiscent of Washington crossing the Delaware, the depicted scene is of a girl standing on the seat of a car waving a banner that says "Academy." Next to her is what appears to be a typical college boy of the day, seen in a billowy fur coat with an upraised matching hat. The painting comes with a preliminary art piece (7.5x9.5" gouache on artist board) that was most likely an outdoor magazine cover, as Tyng was known to do such works. The set was recently discovered in the Boston area and originally sold for $260. Everything about it is classic, from the car to the pennant to the players in the background. This is a fantastic work of art with a distinct Roaring '20s feel to it.
