Babe Ruth Boston Braves Negative with Dizzy and Paul Dean
Displayed is a plastic photo negative from the 1935 season that pictures Hall of Famer Babe Ruth in the home uniform of the National League Boston Braves, in his last season as a player. Ruth is pictured between Dizzy and Paul Dean, brothers who pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals and wearing the Cardinals' road uniform. The location of the photo is unknown. Ruth had been released by the New York Yankees following the 1934 season, and he signed with the Boston Braves as a combination vice president, an assistant manager, and a left fielder. At 40 years old, Ruth struggled with injuries, and his batting suffered. He did hit three home runs in a game on May 25th at Pittsburgh, but he retired soon after, and his last game was on May 30th, at Philadelphia. After retiring, Ruth quit the Boston Braves organization, and he blasted the Boston owner, Judge Emil Fuchs, alleging that Fuchs reneged on promises to him and saying of Fuchs, "He would double-cross a hot cross bun." Dizzy Dean was a Hall of Fame right-hander who pitched in 12 Major League seasons, mostly for the Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs. Dizzy had a lifetime 150-83 record. In '35, he went 28-12 and was second in NL MVP voting. Dizzy's brother, Paul Dean, had a 19-12 record in '35, and a lifetime record of 50-34, as both Dean brothers had careers shortened by injuries. Ruth and Dizzy Dean were 6'2", and Paul Dean was 6'0", so the Dean brothers were not really taller than Ruth, as the picture implies. Perhaps the Deans were on a warm-up mound and Ruth was standing behind the brothers, on flat ground. The negative measures approx. 3.25x4.1", and an included photo made from the negative measures 4x5". The photo has a tiny spot near the upper left corner. The negative is in excellent condition. The negative has value as a remembrance of the great Bambino in his final playing season.
