Babe Ruth "World Champion Athletes" Original Glass Plate Negative
Original glass plate negative picturing eight of the greatest sports athletes in the United States at the time posing together at a banquet in 1928. Standing in the back row (left to right) are Babe Ruth (baseball), Gene Tunney (boxing), Johnny Weissmuller (swimming), and Bill Cook (hockey). Seated in the front row (left to right) are Bill Tilden (tennis), Bobby Jones (golf), Fred Spencer (cyclist), and Charlie Winters (cyclist). These eight athletes were the invited guests of boxing promoter Tex Rickard, who hosted a special banquet to honor champions in various sports. The negative (6x4") displays a few tiny areas of emulsion loss to the central image, as well as along the left border. A production number has been etched along the right border. Accompanied by a small positive photo of the image printed on paper.
