Bear Bryant Personally Gifted Herringbone Tweed Hat to Actor Max Baer Jr.

Bear Bryant Personally Gifted Herringbone Tweed Hat to Actor Max Baer Jr.

From Bear to Baer! This gray herringbone tweed-pattern hat, manufactured by Adam of New York and likely worn by legendary college football coach Bear Bryant, was given to actor Max Baer, Jr., who played Jethro Bodine on the "Beverly Hillbillies" TV show. The hat is Size XL and is minus the feather, which has fallen off over the course of time. The interior shows good use with some small holes evident. The provenance for this hat can be viewed on YouTube, where Max Baer's former wife details its history (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UhGvyKEmNM&t=153s). As she states in the video, Max Baer Jr. and Bear Bryant were golfing buddies and this is one of two hats Bear Bryant gave to Baer in the mid-1960s. While she cannot state with certainty that Bryant wore this hat, the size matches other known examples, so the chances are good that he did. This hat was originally sold by Lelands in our Spring 2014 auction and has been consigned directly by the original purchaser.
