Beautiful 1928 Bronze Tennis Trophy
The 1920s were the "golden age" of sports trophies, as evidenced by this beautiful example: a bronze tennis trophy awarded to the Long Beach Y.M.C.A. tennis champion in 1928. The finely detailed statue, which is mounted upon a rectangular bronze base, depicts a male tennis player holding a tennis racket. (The tennis racket is a separate piece and inserts into the opening of the right hand.) The engraving along the side of the base (which appears on three of the four sides) reads "Champion 1928 - Long Beach Y.M.C.A. - Won By John Horrell Jr." No manufacturer's stamping is present, but this is obviously a top-of-the line example and one that we have never seen before. The trophy measures eight inches in height and is approximately eight inches wide at its furthest points. Excellent to Mint condition.
