Ben Schwartzwalder Handwritten 6-Page Letter with Marvelous Ernie Davis & Jim Brown Content
Legendary Syracuse football coach Ben Schwartzwalder is on both ends of this correspondence, including an amazing six page letter from Ben to NY sports editor Tim Cohane. The two-page request from Cohane - dated September 8, 1986 and typed on green paper, requests info from the coach for an upcoming series. Schawrtzwalder's handwritten response mentions Ernie Davis and schools that recruited him; Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Pitt, Penn State, Maryland.He also describes how important Jim Brown was in Ernie's decision to attend 'Cuse and mentions Ernie winning the Heisman and meeting JFK. Other topics include Floyd Little, and the 1960 Cotton Bowl game. The Hall of Fame coach spent a quarter century patrolling the sidelines at Syracuse and was Coach of the Year in 1959, when he led his squad to its only National Championship to date.
