Benny Friedman Vintage Signature (PSA GEM MINT 10)

Benny Friedman Vintage Signature (PSA GEM MINT 10)

"Benny (Friedman) revolutionized football," said Pro Football Hall of Fame player, coach, and owner George Halas. "He forced the defenses out of the dark ages." Friedman, a star NFL quarterback for eight seasons, changed pro football by often calling plays at the line, unusual for the time, and frequently passing on first and second down, rare in that era. Presented is a Benny Friedman vintage signature, signed on a business sized cut card in the early 1930s, when he was still an NFL player. Friedman was a 2-time First Team Consensus All-American quarterback at the University of Michigan in 1925-26, and he was a triple-threat - as he ran, played defensive back and was a placekicker. In the NFL, he played for the Cleveland Bulldogs (1927), the Detroit Wolverines (1928), the New York Football Giants (1929-31), and the Brooklyn Dodgers (1932-34). A tailback, he led the NFL in passing for four consecutive years (1927-30), and he also played in the secondary on defense, returned kicks, and placekicked. As was later true with Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg during the 1930s-40s, Friedman, who was Jewish, became a great source of inspiration for Jewish sports fans of the 1920-30s. Friedman was a head coach for two games at the end of the '30 season for the New York Football Giants, and he coached the Brooklyn Dodgers football team in 1930. He was also a head college coach at CCNY in New York City and at Brandeis University. He is an inaugural member of the College Football Hall of Fame, and he was posthumously elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. During World War II, Friedman was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and served aboard an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. The Friedman signature and his inscribed "Sincerely" were written in perfect, flowing black fountain pen ink. The cut card measures approx. 2.5x3.5", and it exhibits some slight darkening on the card itself but is in overall excellent condition. The card has been encapsulated and Auto Graded the HIGHEST POSSIBLE by PSA, as GEM MT 10.
