Bill Belichick Signed 1976 Detroit Lions Playbook (PSA)
Presented is a great opportunity to possess a fascinating item that is valuable in two ways. First, displayed is a Detroit Lions "Revised 1976 Playbook" that has been signed by iconic NFL coach Bill Belichick, who has won a record six Super Bowls as a head coach (with the New England Patriots), and a record eight Super Bowls as either a head coach or a coordinator, as he was a part of two New York Giants Super Bowl Champions as a defensive coordinator. Belichick is decidedly in the running for the designation as the best NFL coach of all-time. At present, he is the head coach and general manager of the New England Patriots, and his signature, especially on such a coaching-appropriate article of memorabilia as an NFL playbook, is a wonderful way to showcase his career, and a sure way to generate interest in any sports collection. Second, not only is Belichick's signature on an NFL playbook valuable, but the playbook itself is of tremendous interest to any sports fan. The 10.75x11.25" blue three-ring binder has a worn title sticker on the front reading "1977 Work Playbook/24." It contains a treasure trove of football information, insider terminology and complex diagrams of formations and plays. Hundreds of pages are divided into categories: basic information, offensive organization, short yardage and goal line situations, line blocking, backs blocking, pass routes, sweeps, draws, slants, tosses, numbering of offensive and defensive positions, etc. The playbook focuses on the offense, because Belichick, who was a special assistant for Detroit in 1976, was promoted to the positions of the Lions' receivers coach for 1977. The playbook is so thorough that very detailed instructions are even given for entering and leaving the huddle. A 1977 Detroit Lions Media Guide is also included with the playbook. Belichick first learned about football as a youth when his father was a coach for the U.S. Naval Academy, and little Bill was allowed to watch as the Navy coaches broke down films. Belichick played football at Wesleyan and began his pro coaching as an assistant coach with the Baltimore Colts in 1975 before joining Detroit the next season. Belichick used a large marker, writing in red ink, to mark the first page in the playbook as his own. He wrote and inscribed "Revised 1976 Playbook/Belichick." The top ring in the three-ring binder has some tape on it, and the two parts of the ring are not quite closing enough on their own in holding the hundreds of pages of inside football knowledge. Overall, the revised playbook shows good use, and yet it is still in very good condition. The playbook comes with both a Beckett LOA and a PSA LOA. A signature from perhaps the greatest NFL coach in history on a page of his own playbook, plus the Detroit Lions playbook itself, jammed with intriguing football instruction and terminology, down to the smallest detail? What more could any fan, and collector, want?
