Billiken Cards (8)
An awesome octet from the 60 known cards from the Billiken Cigarettes set of Cuban League stars -- including major league and Negro League drop-ins -- issued in 1923-24. These cards were distributed in packs of Cigarros Billiken and are among the scarcest and most coveted of all Cuban issues. Players here include Cuban HOFers Julio Rojo, Esteban “Mayari” Montalvo (Santa Clara), Jose Maria Fernandez, Isidro Fabre (Almendares), as well as Merven “Red” Ryan (Santa Clara), “Snake” Henrry, Eugenio Morin (Almendares), Eufemio Abreau (Havana). Players are pictured in b&w portraits above their last names and teams in a panel on bottom. Backs feature a Billiken generic ad printed in Spanish. Condition averages G-VG, most w/centering issues and general wear and browning but aside from some surface loss on the Henrry card the images are fairly sharp, as are the edges and corners. Cards measure 2 x 2 5/8”.
