Heavyweight Champions Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier battled each other in three epic fights. Two of those fights are captured here via dual-signed magazine covers of Sports Illustrated detailing the blow-by-blow action of two of those slugfests. The third dual-signed Sports Illustrated copy in this lot features another monumental battle between heavyweights Floyd Patterson and Ingemar Johansson. The first SI magazine is dated March 15, 1971, and shows Smokin’ Joe Frazier landing a left hook to Ali’s jaw, sending “The Greatest” reeling during their first meeting on March 8, 1971. Frazier would go on to claim a 15-round unanimous decision to win the crown. On that cover, both fighters signed it with silver metallic paint pens. The second SI magazine is dated Oct. 13, 1975, and shows Ali landing right cross toe Frazier’s left eye during their third meeting, which took place on Oct. 1, 1975, in the Philippines. Ali would win this bout via TKO in the 14th round. Both boxers signed it in blue fiber-tip markers; Ali near the top and Frazier on the bottom. The third and final SI magazine that sports a dual-signed cover is dated July 6, 1959, and shows heavyweights Floyd Patterson struggling to keep himself up following a barrage of blows from Johansson. This fight took place on June 26, 1959, at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Both boxers signed the cover in black with fiber-tip markers. Johansson stunned the reigning champ by scoring a third-round TKO. All signatures come with LOAs from JSA.
