Cal Ripken Jr. 2,131 Game Ball Signed and Inscribed By Frank Robinson (PSA)
<p>On September 6, 1995, Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr. broke the record set by HOF New York Yankee Lou Gehrig for the most consecutive games played in Major League history, as the Baltimore Orioles' Ripken played in his 2,131st consecutive contest. Presented is a game ball from that historic event that is signed by Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, then the General Manager of the Baltimore organization. Cal Ripken played 21 Major League seasons, mostly at shortstop, with third base duty early and late in his career. Ripken was a power hitting shortstop, very rare in his era, and he bashed 431 home runs. He hit .276 lifetime and was a 2-time American league MVP, a major contributor to the 1983 Baltimore Orioles World Championship, a 19-time All-Star, an 8-time Silver Slugger, and a 2-time Gold Glove winner. However, Ripken is most remembered for his still-standing amazing playing streak. On the night Ripken broke Gehrig's record, when the game became official after the bottom of the fifth inning, the game was stopped while fans, teammates, opposing players, and even umpires gave Ripken an amazing 22-minute standing ovation. Frank Robinson became the first African American Major League manager in history when he was named a player-manager with the Cleveland Indians in 1975, the only player to have ever won Most Valuable Player Awards in both Major Leagues: 1961 with the Cincinnati Reds and 1966 (with the Triple Crown) with the Baltimore Orioles. Robinson, an outfielder-first baseman, hit 586 career home runs. The Official American League (Budig) ball shows great game use, with numerous scuff and dirt marks. The ball has a special stamped marking that depicts the numeral "8" (Ripken's number), and around the numeral is imprinted, "Ripken 2130 2131 Orioles." Robinson signed and inscribed the ball in blue ink from a ballpoint pen. Robinson wrote "Game Ball/"2131"/9/6/96/Frank Robinson Asst. G.M." The Robinson signature and inscription rate a 7/10. The ball comes with a PSA Letter of Authentication. This signed and inscribed ball connects two Hall of Famers, Ripken and Robinson, with one of baseball's most historic games.
