"Center" Football Bronze by Joseph Brown

"Center" Football Bronze by Joseph Brown

An early, vintage Brown piece from 1934 that allegorizes football by focusing on the most unsung and overburdened position of all, the center. Making the canny point that the man who turns the ignition key of every play by snapping the ball is the "center of gravity" and thus the anchor for any team, Brown casts his center with his hands tensely gripping the ball on the turf before him, his head jutting up, eyes staring straight ahead into the coming storm of rushing lineman. Uncannily genuine likeness of early football uniforms and the hardiness of the men who played the game without facemasks. Figure of the center is 4 x 6 x 6" and mounted on a metal base atop a larger silver base of 7 x 7 1/2 x 2". Main base is signed by Brown. Piece is NRMT with minor nicks and scratches. One of his earliest, and best, bronzes.
