Charlie Gehringer Detroit Tigers Old Timers Game Worn Jersey
This splendid flannel jersey dating from the early 1970s was worn by Hall of Famer Charlie Gehringer in one of the last times, if not the last time, he suited up in a Tigers uniform. It would cost close to six figures to obtain a jersey that was worn by Gehringer as an all original from his playing days and there are only a couple known to exist. The classic Detroit gothic D on the front is all original, number 2 was placed on the back by the team for Gehringer. The jersey was at one time lettered up for Jack Whillock, number 43 who only played 7 games for the Tigers in 1971. Thus, it makes total sense that the Tigers would reuse the jersey for an Old Timers Game. It is clean and shows light use and would nicely fit the 6 foot, 190 pound frame of Gehringer. The jersey is a button-front with Wilson size 44 tag on the front tail. Gehringer spent all of his 19 Major League seasons in the Motor City club from 1924-42 - right around the time the city was earning that nickname. He amassed an impressive .320 career batting average including a .371 mark in his MVP season of 1937.
