Chief Yellow Horse of the Sacramento Senators by Jim Ballard (1923)

Chief Yellow Horse of the Sacramento Senators by Jim Ballard (1923)

One of the finest images we have discovered so far in the archive. The first “full blooded” Native American to play baseball in the majors. Stunning image of his first year with the Sacramento Senators (he went 22-13 with a 3.68 era) after injuring his right arm in Pittsburgh with the Pirates (his manager Kid Elberfeld said he was as fast as the Big Train, Walter Johnson). He developed a drinking problem (like so many of his brothers) and later found sobriety and became the model for a Dick Tracy character. Original handpainted lettering in the margin. From the Fredrick Photo Service with original labels of Sacramento photographer Jim Ballard on reverse. 8.5x10.5”. EX.
