Christy Mathewson 1911 World Series Original Glass Plate Negative

Christy Mathewson 1911 World Series Original Glass Plate Negative

Original glass negative capturing Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson as a member of the New York Giants. Mathewson is pictured warming up on the sideline prior to a game in the 1911 World Series against the Philadelphia Athletics. (The New York Giants' solid black uniform seen here was specially produced for the 1911 World Series and was not worn during the regular season.) The notation "Matty Giants World Series" is written along the top border. Mathewson started both Games 1 and 3 at the Polo Grounds in the Series, winning Game 1 and losing a tough 3-2 decision in ten innings in Game 3. The glass negative (7x5") displays a small chip in the upper left corner and several small areas of emulsion loss along the top border which do not affect the central image. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. (Please note: the positive image seen on our website is for illustrative purposes only and does not accompany the negative; only the negative is offered in this lot.)
