Christy Mathewson Memorial Benefit Tag

Christy Mathewson Memorial Benefit Tag

After an outstanding career in baseball, World War I veteran Christy Mathewson succumbed in 1925 to an illness caused during a military training exercise. A memorial game was held on his behalf between the New York Giants and Washington Senators at the Polo Grounds on Wednesday, July 7th, 1926, to benefit Matty's family. This diecut disc is approximately 3" wide and was given out to fans at that game. It has a hole punched at the top, presumably for a string to allow being hung by a shirt button. One side features a picture of the legendary Giant, while the other has a tribute to the "Gallant Sportsman, Courageous Soldier, Kindly Gentleman." There are no creases or marks evident, and the item is in VG-EX condition.
