Circa 1902 Fred Parent Original Photographic Study by Carl Horner with Image Used for T206 and Seven Cards (ex-Halper Collection)

Extraordinary circa 1902 original photographic display produced by noted Boston photographer Carl Horner. The photo study, which features eight original Carl Horner studio photographs, captures Boston Americans shortstop Freddy Parent in eight different poses (the team was not known as the Red Sox until 1908). The portrait image of Parent is the most familiar to collectors because it was used in Horner's 1902 and 1904 American League team composites, as well as the following seven card issues: T206 White Border, 1902 W600 Sporting Life Cabinets, 1903 E107-1 Breisch-Williams, 1906 WG2 Fan Craze, 1908 Rose Postcards, 1910 M116 Sporting Life, and 1912 Colgan's Chips. The other seven full-body photos each picture Parent in uniform as he strikes various baseball poses in the studio. Horner's credit stamp appears in red lettering in the lower right corner of the mount. This piece has the special provenance of once residing in the famed Barry Halper Collection. It entered the hobby in 1999, when the Halper Collection was sold at auction by Sotheby's in New York. It has been consigned to this auction by the original purchaser in 1999 and retains the original Sotheby's auction label affixed to the glass in the lower left corner.Parent joined the Boston Americans in 1901 and was the club's starting shortstop for seven consecutive seasons before being traded to the Chicago White Sox, where he finished his career in 1911. Parent was a key member of Boston's 1903 pennant-winning club, which took part in the first modern-day World Series. Boston defeated the heavily favored Pittsburgh Pirates five games to three in that inaugural fall classic, with Parent batting .284 and contributing four RBI in the club's Series win. Each mounted photo measures 4x5.5" and is in apparent Near Mint condition. Framed to total dimensions of 38x10.25". Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
