Circa 1908 "Jack Johnson" Silver Match Safe
Cast model of pugilist bears striking resemblance to the storied and downtrodden heavyweight champion. Solid silver Edwardian is British by manufacture. Stunning original vesta case (match safe) is fully hallmarked from Birmingham (UK) dating it to 1905 by Henry Matthews. Base case dates a few years earlier than its actual manufacturer which is probably circa 1908, the year he won the championship in Sydney from Tommy Burns. You would NEVER see such a piece manufactured in America yet yes in the more enlightened UK. Appx 13.9g of silver and measures 4.3x3x1 cm.
