Circa 1910 Charles Rigler Umpire's Cap
The most thankless job in baseball belongs to the umpires, who are ignored on their best days and heckled mercilessly most others. This is the earliest umpire's cap that we have ever handled, as it belonged to the man who has been credited with instituting the practice of using arm signals when calling balls and strikes: Charles "Cy" Rigler. "C. Rigler" is stitched inside the band and there's a silk lining inside with an "A.G. Spalding & Bros." logo. Originating from the Rigler family, this Hall of Fame-quality hat was most likely saved due its having been used in a special game (he worked 10 World Series, among the most in big-league history). It is in very nice condition other than a little rust on the top button and the color having faded from black to gray. The cap shows very nice use and promises to increase in value should Rigler be inducted into the Hall of Fame - a distinct possibility.
