Circa 1911 New York Highlanders Team Photograph

Circa 1911 New York Highlanders Team Photograph

Interesting history of the New York Yankees franchise is contained in this circa 1911 team photo. A total of 30 people are lined up front-to-back in this image, taken on a field that looks more like a sandlot than a pro sports venue. As team nicknames were less formalized in the early 1900s, the team was generally known as the Highlanders from 1903-12, after which they became the Yankees. The pencil notation on the back, however reads "Highlanders Yankees in Spring Training," indicating that this is from the period when both names were in use. Classic 4.75x3.75" shot has verso stamps from noted photo collection service Brown Brothers.
