Circa 1913 Lefty Williams at Bat Photograph (PSA Type I)
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Original Type I photo capturing pitcher Claude “Lefty” Williams at the plate during batting practice. This is an interesting photo of Williams, not just because he is pictured at the plate, but because it appears to date prior to his Major League career. While we cannot be certain because of the angle, it appears that a large “N” is on the front of his cap. Williams played with the Nashville Volunteers in 1913, which was the same year that he later made his Major League debut with Detroit. The poor quality of the playing grounds seen here, along with the horse and buggy in the background, also suggests the earlier 1913 timeframe, as opposed to the mid-1920s, during his post-banishment playing career. If this photo was taken in 1913, it might be the earliest image of Williams as a professional ballplayer. Williams’ first full season in the Majors was 1916 with the White Sox. A key member of the club’s 1917 World Championship season, Williams was one of eight White Sox players who later conspired to “throw” the 1919 World Series, an act for which all were later banned from baseball for life. Two Brown Brothers credit stamps appear on the reverse, as does Williams’ name, written in pencil. The photo (6.5x4.75”) remains in Excellent to Mint condition.
