Circa 1918 Babe Ruth Curve Ball Grip Glass Plate Negative by Charles Conlon

Circa 1918 Babe Ruth Curve Ball Grip Glass Plate Negative by Charles Conlon

Magnificent history and content in this 1918 glass plate negative of Babe Ruth displaying his pitching grip as part of a series of shots compiled by legendary photographer Charles Conlon. Glass slide measures 4x5", is in great condition, and comes with the original paper sleeve (extensive foxing and some paper loss), with Conlon's writing: "Ruth - Red Sox - Curve Ball." This is the one and only glass plate negative directly from the camera and is also identified in Conlon's writing at the upper edge. It's easy to forget that Babe recorded 78 wins on the hill for the Red Sox between 1915 and 1918, including a 1.75 "Dead Ball Era" ERA in 1916. Though he did take the mound after his contract was purchased by the Yankees in 1919, those appearances were few and far between. While many photos exist of the Bambino's batting grip, it is very difficult to find one from his pitching days, and this negative stands at the head of the class.
