Circa 1920 Ross Youngs Photograph

Vintage mounted photograph capturing Hall of Fame outfielder Ross Youngs as a member of the New York Giants. Youngs is pictured at the plate in his follow-through swing during pregame batting practice. Two Brown Brothers credit stamps appear on the reverse, along with handwritten biographical information about Youngs, including the fact that he died in 1927 at the age of 30. The date “May 6, 1920” is also written on the reverse. (That date is probably accurate, because the home uniform style shown here was only worn by the Giants between the years 1919 and 1921.) The Giants hosted the Brooklyn Robins on May 6, 1920, with Youngs going hitless in three at bats in the Giants 2-1 win. Youngs got off to a slow start in 1920, as he was hitting only .208 after the game against Brooklyn. He obviously corrected whatever problems he was having at the plate, because he finished the year with a .351 average. One of the top hitters of his day, Youngs batted over .300 in nine of his 10 seasons and finished with a lifetime average of .322. The photo (6.5x8.75”) displays a few light creases and a tiny area of abrasion near the left border. In Very Good to Excellent condition. It has been affixed thick paper mount of equal dimensions. Though this is clearly a vintage photo, because it has been mounted, PSA will not accept it for evaluation, therefore, no guarantee can be made regarding a specific Type designation. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive.
