Circa 1930s "Champions" Clock w/Babe Ruth, Red Grange & Joe Louis
This scarce 1930s figural clock, titled "Champions" along the base, features the likenesses of many of the era's greatest athletes. While none of the athletes are identified by name, most of the central figures are easily recognizable, including Babe Ruth, Red Grange, and Joe Louis, who is shown delivering a blow to his opponent's jaw (most likely Max Schmeling). The four additional sports figures near the base are more generic in nature, but the woman golfer is most likely Babe Didrikson and the woman tennis player is probably Helen Willis. Produced by the United Clock Company of Brooklyn, New York, the clock face features the company name, "United," below the number "12." The clock retains what appears to be its original power cord, but it is not operational. The two small light bulbs intended to to be displayed in the sockets at either side of the clock are not present, which is almost always the case for this piece (we have never seen an example that retained the original bulbs). The clock displays wear commensurate with its age and former use, and is in overall Excellent condition. Dimensions: 12 (L) x 4 (W) x 11 (H) inches.
