Circa 1931 Andy Cohen Newark Bears Game Worn Jersey with Pants

Circa 1931 Andy Cohen Newark Bears Game Worn Jersey with Pants

Newark Bears home jersey worn by Andy Cohen, circa 1931. Accompanied by matching pants (not worn by Cohen). Minor-league jerseys from this time period, especially those from prominent teams such as the Bears, are rare. This is just the second pre-1940s Newark Bears jersey we have ever offered, and we cannot recall having seen more than a few others. The cream-colored button-down flannel jersey, with red-and-blue piping, features the club's "Bear" logo patch on the left breast and the number "2," applied in black felt, on the reverse. Located in the collar are a "Spalding" label and the name "A. Cohen" chain-stitched in red. The matching pants feature a "Spalding" label in the waistband and a button fly. Despite the absence of a year tag, Cohen played with the Newark Bears only during the years 1930 to 1932, thereby conclusively dating the jersey to that narrow three-year span. Both garments display extensive use, including tears, repaired tears, soiling, heavy staining, and loss of material to both the logo patch and numeral.

The Newark Bears, members of the International League, were one of the most successful franchises in minor-league history. That's not surprising, since the club served as the New York Yankees top farm club from 1932 to 1949. During that time span, many of the Yankees top players graduated to the parent club from Newark, including Yogi Berra, Joe Gordon, Charlie Keller, and Spud Chandler.

Andy Cohen was one of the few Jewish players in organized baseball during the 1920s and 1930s. However, unlike other Jewish players who often changed their names to hide their heritage, Cohen kept his his, undaunted by the bias it often occasioned. A good-hitting infielder, Cohen broke into the Majors with the Giants in 1926, and then played two full seasons with the club in 1928 and 1929. Despite batting .281 during those three seasons, he was released by the Giants and spent the remainder of his professional baseball career in the minors, including a three-year stint with the Bears from 1930 to 1932. After his playing days were over, Cohen remained in the game as a minor league manager and later founded the baseball program at the University of Texas at El Paso, where he served as head coach from 1960 to 1976. Cohen died in 1988 at the age of 84.
