Circa 1948 Phil Masi Boston Braves Game Worn Uniform (Jersey, Pants, Socks & Cleats)

<p>Complete Boston Braves road uniform, including pants, undershirt, socks, and cleats, worn by catcher Phil Masi during the late 1940s. This entire ensemble originates directly from Phil Masi's personal collection and has been consigned by a family member. While no year tag is present, the jersey features a zipper front, which the Braves first used in 1946. Masi played with the Braves from 1939 to 1949, therefore this uniform can be narrowly dated to the four-year period 1946-1949.</p><p>The zipper-front gray flannel jersey is lettered "Braves" across the front and features the club's "Tomahawk" logo patch directly below. The number ten appears on the reverse. All letters and numerals are applied in red on navy felt. An "Indian Chief" patch appears on the left sleeve. A "Horace Partridge" label and adjacent "46" size tag are located in the collar. The name "Masi" is chain-stitched in red upon a white strip tag located below the manufacturer's tag. The jersey is original as issued and displays moderate-to-heavy wear, including a slight tear along the perimeter stitching of the sleeve patch.&nbsp;</p><p>The matching gray flannel pants feature a "Horace Partridge" label and adjacent "38" size tag affixed to the top of the interior fly.&nbsp;The name "Masi" is chain-stitched in red upon a white strip tag located in the rear of the waistband. The pants, which feature both a single button and zipper fly, are original as issued and display moderate-to-heavy wear, including light soil staining front and reverse. Also included with the uniform are a "Tim McAuliffe" blue-sleeve baseball undershirt (light use), a pair of navy stirrup socks with red and white stripes (moderate use), and pair of MacGregor black baseball cleats (heavy wear).&nbsp;</p><p>Phil Masi enjoyed a successful fourteen-year (1939-1952) Major League career, most of which was spent with the Milwaukee Braves during the 1940s. A four-time All-Star, Masi helped lead the Braves to the National League championship in 1948. Despite his many accomplishments during his career, Masi is best remembered for being the central figure in one of the most controversial plays in World Series history. In the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 1 of the 1948 fall classic, Masi was on second base when Indians pitcher Bob Feller whirled and threw to shortstop Lou Boudreau in an attempt to pick him off. To most observers, and especially Feller and Boudreau, the pick off was successful. Umpire Bill Stewart, however, ruled otherwise, sparking a near riot amongst the Indians players. Stewart's decision ultimately decided the game, as moments later Tommy Holmes' single&nbsp; drove Masi home with the only run of the game.</p>
