Circa 1960s Frank Thomas Signed & Game Used Cleats
Frank Joseph Thomas played for seven different National League teams from 1951-1966. He played the outfield, third base and first base, and he was a good power hitter who hit 286 career homers, and in ten seasons hit at least 20 home runs. Offered is a pair of 1960s game worn signed Frank Joseph Thomas cleats. This Frank Thomas, known as "The Original," or "The Big Donkey," is often confused with Frank Edward Thomas Jr., a first baseman and a designated hitter slugger known as "The Big Hurt," who played for three teams in the American League from 1990 to 2008 (mainly with the Chicago White Sox), was a 2-time AL MVP, an AL batting champion in 1997, a 5-time All-Star and a 4-time Silver Slugger. The Original Frank Thomas started his Major League career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1951 and his Major League time with the Pirates lasted through '58. After playing for the Chicago Cubs in 1960 and splitting 1961 between the Cubs and the Milwaukee Braves, Thomas became part of the original New York Mets in 1962. Thomas was one of the few original New York Mets who had a good season in 1962, as he hit 34 home runs and added 94 RBIs. Thomas stayed with the Mets through part of the 1964 season, and then played for the Phillies, Houston Astros, Milwaukee Braves (again), Chicago Cubs (again) through the 1966 season, when he ended his career. The cleats are each 12" long. On the tongue of each shoe, is stamped, with a small holepunch, "Riddell," for the manufacturer and "10" for the size. The original laces have been replaced. A roughly cut, small piece of cloth has been placed inside and over the heel area of each shoe, and Thomas has signed and inscribed the cloth on the back of each shoe, using blue ink from a marker, as "Frank Thomas/1951-1966." The cleats show great wear, with scuffs, wrinkles and thread wear, particularly on the sole of each shoe. The signed and game worn Frank Thomas cleats make a fine remembrance for early 1960s National League baseball.
