Circa 1972 Roberto Clemente Pittsburgh Pirates Game Worn Cap (Pancho Herrera LOA)
One of the last hats legendary right fielder Roberto Clemente wore during game action circa his last season of 1972, and maybe dating back to the Pirates‚ 1971 championship season due to its heavy use. The Pride of Puerto Rico hand-wrote his number #21 inside the cap, which has New Era tagging and a bent, cracked brim down the middle. This treasured artifact comes with an LOA from former Major Leaguer Pancho Herrera, a native of Cuba who played across the state for the Phillies during Clemente‚s tenure. Also included in the lot is a photo from Pancho showing himself with Clemente wearing the same style hat. The Hall of Fame right fielder is the last player to have been posthumously elected to Cooperstown prior to what would have been his first year of eligibility due to his tragic death on New Year‚s Eve of 1972 while on a plane set to deliver relief materials to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Since 1971, Major League Baseball has bestowed an award named after Clemente to the player who exemplifies the very best on the field as well as through his charity work.
