Circa 1978 University of Pittsburgh Game Used Football Helmet
Game-used University of Pittsburgh football helmet dating from the late 1970s. The gold suspension-style helmet, manufactured by Bill Kelley Athletics, features “Pitt” lettered in black on each side. A black stripe, bordered on either side in white, runs down the center of the helmet. Located on the interior are a Bill Kelley Athletics label and a recertification label date stamped “May 1978.” Two additional Bill Kelley Athletic labels appear on the rear of the exterior, one of which includes the helmet size (“7 5/8”). The numbers “52” and “87” are written on the interior in black marker, indicting use by more than one player. There are also what appear to be a name and initials written in red marker on the interior padding, but both have faded beyond legibility. This helmet dates from the glory days of Pitt football and most likely bridges the careers of Tony Dorsett (1973-1976) and Dan Marino (1979-1982). Pitt was consistently ranked in the top 10 during that time period and was National Champion in 1976. The helmet displays extensive wear, including numerous abrasions, scratches, nicks, and color transfers on the exterior. The helmet is complete with all its interior padding. The face masks clips have broken and are no longer present, but the original facemask accompanies the helmet (not attached).
