Circa Early 1900s Boston Royal Rooters Original Glass Negative

Circa Early 1900s Boston Royal Rooters Original Glass Negative

Original glass negative capturing Boston's famed "Royal Rooters" as they cheer their beloved Red Sox on to victory from the outfield bleachers during a game, circa early 1900s. Many of the fans are waving a Red Sox pennant, which appears to read "American League Champions" along the base. If so, then this image was most likely taken at a World Series game. A large white sign reading "The Boston Delegation" can be seen in the background, which suggests that the Red Sox were on the road here. Boston appeared in, and won, the World Series in 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918. The Boston "Royal Rooters," which was organized by famed saloon keeper "Nuf Ced" McGreevy in the late 1890s are perhaps the most well-known organized fan base in sports history. Despite that fact, photos of the Rooters are scarce, making this image an especially significant find. The glass negative (7x5") displays small areas of emulsion loss along the top border, as well as a small scratch in the upper right corner. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. (Please note: the positive image seen on our website is for illustrative purposes only and does not accompany the negative; only the negative is offered in this lot.)
