Cleveland Pennants Including Rare 1948 Pennant with Satchel Page (7)
On the morning of October 12, 1948, estimates of between 300,000-500,000 persons squeezed shoulder-to-shoulder along Euclid Avenue, Cleveland's main city thoroughfare, to watch the victory parade of the Cleveland Indians, who had won the team's first World Series since 1920. In that same year, the Cleveland Browns of the All-American Football Conference, would win the third of the four league championships that they won in a row. Presented is a group of seven Cleveland team pennants: six for the Cleveland Indians and one for the Cleveland Browns. 1) A 27" long 1948 rare Cleveland Indian pennant that shows a Native American in full headdress with 15 of the team's key players listed on various feathers in the headdress. The names include that of Hall of Famer Satchel Paige, the legendary pitcher from the Negro Leagues who was the first African American pitcher in the American League. Other names include Hall of Famers: Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, Early Wynn and Lou Boudreau. The blue pennant includes gold colored lettering that reads "World Series Cleveland, Ohio 1948." There is some loss of the material on the bottom left corner. The pennant exhibits fading of colors, particularly on "Cleveland, Ohio 1948." The very tip of the pennant is missing. 2) A great vintage pennant, or as some might prefer - banner. Measuring approx. 17x23", the blue felt-like souvenir depicts a baseball field with the 1954 American League Champions' starting line-up placed into the appropriate spots on the "field," and the names of the substitutes, manager and coaches printed on the sides. The pennant has Larry Doby's name in center field, and the Hall of Famer was the first African American player in the American League. Hall of Fame pitchers Bob Feller, Bob Lemon and Early Wynn are also listed as is the Indians' skipper, Hall of Fame manager Al Lopez. The Indian logo, as on most of the pennants in this offering, shows a broadly smiling "Indian" that would be thought offensive today. 3) An approximately 26" long pennant that is red with white lettering. It has an "Indian" and reads "Cleveland Indians." There is some creasing and a few small stains. 4) A 14" long pennant in red, with gold colored lettering. It depicts an "Indian" and reads "Cleveland Indians/copyright Bazooka." Bazooka was a well-known gum manufacturer. There is a small stain near the long end of the pennant and a tiny portion of the pennant's tip is missing. 5) A nearly 12" pennant, mostly green. It depicts an "Indian" and reads "Cleveland Indians." The gold-colored strands used to hang the pennant show a loss of material and some staining. 6) An 8.8" pennant, with a red background and white lettering. It has a small MLB logo, an "Indian," and reads "Cleveland Indians." 7) An 11.5" pennant for the Cleveland Browns football team. The team is named after its co-founder and first coach, Paul Brown, so naturally the predominant color in the pennant is brown. It has an NFL logo, and a mascot, and reads "Cleveland Browns." The date of issuance of most of the pennants is not indicated. In general, because of age, most of the pennants show some fading. Overall, aside from the aforementioned conditions, the pennants are in good condition, and they will make a colorful display for any sports assemblage.
