Coney Island Carousel Sign

Coney Island Carousel Sign

At the Turn of the Century, Coney Island was “the people’s beach”, the place where the masses went with their families for entertainment and to get away from summer in the city. And thousands upon thousands of weekend escapees no doubt took note of this stern sign with some good cautionary advice for those queued up for the carousel. The 16 x 14” metallic sign is painted with a brownish-red border and a light brown interior with black and red letters. Understandable damage in the form of mild erosion on the upper left corner and paint from a chip here and there, but the additional paint streaks from a different source is original. Paint is 98%. Sign is sturdy and well supported on the underside by a pegboard-style backing. Guaranteed to make the Cyclone, the Steeplechase and Luna Park appear before your eyes and put the taste of a Nathan’s hot dog on your tongue.
