Crosley Field Seating Sign
The Cincinnati Reds made Crosley Field home from 1912 through June 24, 1970. The ballpark was the site of legendary events and the home field of many Hall of Famers. Presented is a fantastic metal seating sign that hung inside Crosley Field for decades. Crosley Field was originally known as Redland Field, but in 1934 radio manufacturer Powell purchased the Cincinnati franchise and named the ballpark after himself. Crosley Field was home to the World Series in 1919, '39, '40, and '61, and the stadium hosted the 1938 and '53 All-Star Games. The first Major League night-game was played there in 1935. On June 11, 1969, Crosley Field was the site of double no-hitters by the Reds' Jim Maloney and the Houston Astros' Don Wilson. Joe Nuxhall, at age 15, became the youngest player in Major League history when he pitched for the Reds at Crosley Field on June 10, 1944. The great Hank Aaron achieved his 3,000th hit at Crosley Field on May 17, 1970. Some of the Hall of Fame Cincinnati Reds who called Crosley Field home: Ernie Lombardi, Tony Perez, Frank Robinson, Eppa Rixey, Edd Roush, Mordeci Brown, and manager Sparky Anderson. The Reds moved to Riverfront Stadium after leaving Crosley Field and the Reds now play at The Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. Signs such as the offered item were used and reused in the stadium. The sign has had several coats of paint. One can see green paint under the red paint where it is slightly chipped. This is as original as when it hung; the only thing that has been touched up is the "Mr. Red" at the top. It was painted over at one time and not repainted. The outline of raised paint could be seen and it has been traced over with white paint. The areas where the lettering and number appear are 100% original. The sign was removed when Crosley Field was demolished. The has some areas in which some minor chipping of paint has occurred, particularly on the topside hooks used to hang the sign, and there are a few minor stains. The sign is 35 " wide and 23.75" at its tallest point. Overall, the sign shows typical wear, and it is even double-sided.
