December 22nd, 1914, August Herrmann Signed "Sale of the Yankees" Letter to Colonel Tillinghast Huston Three Weeks Before Sale was Completed - Includes Response from Huston Five Days Before Sale was Announced (ex-Barry Halper Collection)

One-page typed letter, dated December 22, 1914, signed by August Herrmann, owner of the Cincinnati Reds and Chairman of the National Commission, Major League Baseball's governing body at the time. PSA has encapsulated the letter and certified the signature as "Authentic." In his letter, Herrmann writes to T. L. Huston, who, along with his partner Jacob Ruppert, were in the final stages of purchasing the New York Yankees from Frank Farrell.

Herrmann opens by stating "I have been waiting for the official announcement of the sale of the Yankees and sincerely trust that nothing will happen to bring it to a proper consummation." Herrmann obviously knew that the sale was all but finalized, so the remainder of his letter deals with both front office staffing issues for the Yankees and a potential trade between his Reds and Huston's newly purchased club. In part: "While in New York I spoke with you about Mr. Fred Goode, who wants to secure a position with the Club, either as a business manager, secretary and treasurer, or something else along those lines. . . . Confidentially, we may want to dispose of the services of Niehoff and Yingling. Both men in my judgement, would help your Club very materially. . . . We are long on infielders and may want to release these two men, either for an exchange of players, or a cash consideration." It is signed by Herrmann in black fountain pen (grading 8/10) along the base. The letter (8.5x11") displays two vertical and two horizontal folds, light creasing, and a staple hole in the upper left corner. In Very Good condition overall.

Accompanied by a New York Yankees file-copy letter of Huston's response to Herrmann, which is dated January 6, 1915. In his one-page typed missive, Huston apologizes for the delay in responding, explaining that the purchase of the Yankees was taking longer than expected. In part: "The final details for the purchase of the Yankees have not been completed, but there seems to be nothing in the way except those technicalities which the lawyers always interpose." The sale of the Yankees to Ruppert and Huston was officially announced on January 11, 1915, just five days after Huston responded to Herrmann. The file-copy letter (8.5x11") displays light creasing, a few tiny edge tears, and staple holes in the upper left corner.
