Dempsey-Tunney Beech Nut Advertising Standup

Dempsey-Tunney Beech Nut Advertising Standup

With Soldier Field's columned facade bathed in celestial light, this glorious advertisement for the 1927 Jack Dempsey-Gene Tunney fight looks like it could almost be a modern lions vs. Christians match. Framed in rich mahogany, this partially restored (along the top) 33- by 61-inch masterpiece (EX) in thick posterboard was originally designed as a cut-out for the tobacco manufacturer Beech-Nut but could now be a classy centerpiece for any large room. A bi-plane writes "The Scrap of the Century" next to a floating Beech-Nut tobacco pack. Maybe it should have been called "The Long Count of the Century." Tunney retained his heavyweight title in a decision despite being knocked down for more than 10 seconds in the seventh round. But Dempsey did not go to a neutral corner, so the referee's count started late and ran long, allowing Tunney to get up in time. Painted photographic reproduction boasts stunning perspective. You can't keep your eyes off this work. Bring it home and you won't have to.
