Derek Jeter's Locker Used During The 1999 World Series
Now that his Hall of Fame-caliber career is in its waning days, the accolades and tributes continue to mount for New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter. The shortstop's memorabilia is omnipresent, but here's a unique item that is extra special: the locker he used when he suited up for his Subway Series games against the Mets at Shea Stadium between 1998 and 2008. A 19-year veteran who has played his entire career in pinstripes, Jeter helped lead the Bronx Bombers to five World Series titles, including one in 2000 against the Mets, after which he participated in a champagne celebration in front of this very stall. He has compiled a .312 career batting average but saved some of his very best work for when he played his crosstown rivals, as he batted a whopping .364 - his highest mark against any club he has played more than a dozen times. And let's not forget that monster home run to lead off Game 3 of the 2000 Fall Classic, also at Shea Stadium. The locker is 36" wide, 84" tall, 40.5" deep and was used by countless Mets opponents, many of whom were superstars. It's pretty spartan by today's modern locker standards, as there are no video monitors, laptop outlets and various other bells and whistles afforded to today's major leaguers. Instead, you will find nine hooks, four cubbies. a clothes rod, foot locker and upper shelf. The sides are metal mesh so that players could communicate with one another, and there is a plaque adorning the top which reads: "AUTHENTIC SHEA STADIUM VISITORS'S (sic) PLAYER LOCKER USED BY DEREK JETER 1996-2008 (technically, Jeter did not play at Shea until 1998)" underneath a Shea Stadium 1964-2008 logo. A complete player who has distinguished himself both on and off the field, Derek Jeter holds many postseason records, and has a .351 batting average in the World Series. Jeter has earned the titles of "Captain Clutch" and "Mr. November" due to his outstanding performances in the biggest games. Now that he won't be suiting up for games after this fall, this the next best thing - an actual locker where Derek Jeter prepped for - and celebrated - some noteworthy ballgames.
